Lesion removal, or oral lesion excision, is a surgical procedure to remove a sore, ulcer or patch from the inside of your mouth. These lesions could develop on the inner lip, cheek lining, gums, tongue, or the floor or roof of the mouth. Depending on your individual needs, your lesion removal could be the only treatment you need, or it could be part of a greater treatment plan.
When you receive a lesion excision, our dentist will first provide you with an anesthetic to help you remain comfortable during your procedure. Dr. Henkes will then carefully extract the lesion using a soft tissue laser. Tissue that looks healthy may also be removed from around and under the lesion to help ensure that as much of the lesion as possible is removed. We will then apply any necessary medications, bandages or sutures to the area to control or prevent bleeding and help prevent infection while you heal.
Following your surgery, you may experience some swelling, redness or bleeding near the surgery area. This is normal and you should heal within a day or two. You may also have some trouble fully opening your mouth for the first few days after your procedure. Our dentist and team will provide you with post-op instructions to help you heal and recover following your procedure.
